Subversion attended Boozin of the 5000 in New Cross over the weekend, we caught both Saturday and Sunday but the winning band for us by far was Monkish, who played on the Saturday afternoon. Subversion arrived at about 4pm on Saturday, starting at the New Cross Inn. We caught a few outstanding bands, Monkish were our favourite, who could beat a drummer in a Wonder Woman outfit and a small irish guy dancing and falling over in a wig and fishnets. With lyrics such as 'please don't piss in my microwave...' and 'this is unwankable', they had us in stiches. After the break at about 7 the style of the bands changed so we headed over to the Goldsmith's Tavern. Goldsmith's was a much bigger venue and a couple of bands impressed us, especially Moral Dilemma who headlined and put together a great performance.
On the Sunday, we dropped into all four venues. The Birds Nest was tiny but there was a large outdoor area and the atmosphere was key here. The bands on stage were difficult to see though so it was easier to sit about than stand squashed in amongst sweaty pits. The Deptford Arms seemed to be only putting on acoustic sets on Sunday afternoon, there was a different atmosphere in this pub again and we were disappointed there was no music in between. The Goldsmith's Tavern and The New Cross Inn were the highlights, Goldsmith's providing us with chilli jerk chicken which went down a treat. The darkest pub with the most atmosphere was the New Cross Inn and we would return for another night there.
Overall the promoters did well to keep the weekend together and we're sure they made a fair amount from the bar and for their charities.
Stay on the look out for next Spring's event.
