Last ever Tarantula at Sin

For a beach party themed night, costumes were somewhat lacking. Tarantula - run by the same people as Synthetic culture at the Egg club in King's Cross - is a metal/industrial based night.
When it first opened, in September 2007, the club night was a busy three floor affair. The last Tarantula at Sin, just off Charing Cross Road, was much quieter with just two floors. It came to an abrupt end possibly due to the lack of flyers available.
On Friday 18th January 2008, it may not have been packed but there was a friendly atmosphere and a fair amount of intoxication.
For anyone not familiar with Sin, it opened as an alternative venue back in September last year. Launching events such as Tarantula, Decadence and Disorder and Club Antichrist.
As you enter the club, you are greeted by the ticket booth, closely followed by a flight of stairs decending into the deep red and black decor. At the bottom of the stairs you have a choice, you can either enter through some double doors in front of you or turn towards your right.
For Tarantula - around to the right was the industrial floor, this was fairly quiet but ambience was created with a couple of strobes, some black army net and a smoke machine. The music played was a substantial mix of industrial and EBM. The main drawback was the lack of people.
Alternatively, going through the double doors led you to the downstairs bar, one of the quieter indoor areas of the club. Opposite the bar is another flight of stairs - leading to the second floor and the smoking area. The smoking area is within the club so there is no contact with the street outside - it is in the form of a court yard - metal music drifting in. This area seemed very popular and it was easy to step out in and out of the club. The second - metal - floor had a much busier bar and you had to wait a little longer for your drinks.  At the far side of the floor was a stage, with the DJ booth at the back and a pole for about three different dancers, taking it in turns.
The music was a variety of metal classics and newer tracks - all well known with the punters. People seemed to be in good spirits despite Tarantula's premature close after just 5 months.
Sin is an excellent venue for a night out - the different rooms adding variety - althought the numerous stairs may pose navigation problems for girls [or guys] in heels!
On a sad note Tarantula has come to an end, but we have heard rumours of another alternative night making it's way to Sin before Easter.
