Wellcome Collection
The Wellcome collection is a medical and scientific collection consisting of three exhibitions or galleries within one building, including a special exhibit and two permanent galleries. Items displayed include a used guillotine blade, various metal instruments and human remains. The guest exhibit was based on The Heart. If you are into your medical science, you'd be very interested in this one, things which stand out for a gory mind were the different preserved hearts on display including a child's, a pig's and a whale's. Various historical artefacts and information put the collection in perspective. The second collection entitled 'Medicine Man' featured much of Henry Wellcome's own collection. The old medical glass bottles and pots were lined up in the middle on the left hand side as you walk in and one of the first things you can look at is, what was called, a torture chair. Things to note were; the large collection of metal instruments used in surgery before pain relief was used, a used guillotine blade, a mummified man and many different kinds of medical historical artefacts, alongside a collection of artwork.
The other permanent collection entitled 'Medicine Now' focused on 6 main issues; a popular one with today would have been the obesity section.
An interesting collection of art and science, I managed to get round all three collections in an hour, not everyone's cup of tea but if you're interested in gore or all things medical it may be worth a look.
